How to Keep a Leather Bag Looking New for Years

A good leather bag can stay with you for many years, and with a little care it only gets better. A few simple rules:

Genuine leather

Cleaning: gently wipe off dust with a soft dry cloth. Treat a light mark with a slightly damp cloth, without rubbing hard.
Conditioning: every few months, apply a leather cream or oil so the leather stays soft and does not crack. Test on a hidden spot first.
Water and heat: if the bag gets wet, wipe it and let it dry at room temperature, away from heat and direct sun. Do not use a hair dryer.
Storage: keep the bag in a breathable fabric dust bag, stuff it with paper to hold its shape, and do not store it in plastic.
New-leather scent: this is natural and fades gradually as the bag airs.

Cleaning: wipe with a damp cloth and a little mild soap, then dry with a soft cloth.
What to avoid: solvents, alcohol and products made for real leather.
Storage: keep away from heat and direct sun, and do not keep the bag folded for long periods, so permanent creases do not form.

Do not overload the bag beyond what it is built for. If a zip gets stuck, do not force it; gently free the fabric caught in it.
