Genuine or Vegan Leather? The Complete Guide
The world of leather bags is full of terms, and the differences are not always clear. Here we explain simply what each term means and how we label our products.
Full grain
The complete top layer of the hide, as it is, without sanding. It is the strongest and most durable leather. You can see its natural texture, and over the years it develops a richer, more beautiful tone.
Top grain
Also from the top layer of the hide, but its surface is lightly sanded and given an even finish. It is soft, clean-looking and more stain-resistant than full grain. It is the most common leather in quality bags and wallets.
Genuine leather
A general name for real cowhide. Sometimes it refers to the inner layers of the hide, which receive a coating and finish. It is still real animal leather, durable and good value.
Vegan leather (PU)
A synthetic material, usually polyurethane (PU), that looks and feels like leather with no animal components at all. It is light, easy to clean and comes in a wide range of colors and textures.
How we label our products
- Every product has a material label: genuine cowhide leather or vegan leather.
- We only write what the maker declares, without exaggerating. If the maker states it is full grain, we say so in the product details.
- In genuine-leather bags, the lining and strap are sometimes made of fabric or another material. That is listed in the details too.
